If not everyone can be an expert mechanic or a certified handyman, there are certain aspects of the motorcycle that we must keep up to date to ride safely. By considering motorcycle maintenance, even in steps that may seem extremely basic, we ensure we extend the life of components and prevent premature wear.
Before you start any kind of repair or inspection, remember that it is completely prohibited to do so on the street. Cleaning and fixing the motorcycle is classified as an environmental sanction. So, a first step would be to secure a comfortable space to perform motorcycle maintenance.
1. Oil
One of the basic checks to be performed in motorcycle maintenance. Oil level should be checked once a month; in some motorcycle models, it can be checked through an inspection window located in the crankcase. Pay closer attention during hotter months, as oil tends to evaporate faster.

Things to consider: the type of oil, usually specified in the instructions, a new filter should be installed each time the oil is changed, and be careful not to exceed the maximum level, as it’s as bad as being at the minimum level.
2. Chain
When talking about chains in motorcycle maintenance, it involves cleaning, adjusting, and lubricating.
– Cleaning: It is not necessary to clean the chain as often as believed; this depends largely on usage and environmental conditions. Generally done with diesel and a brush or scrubbing brush.

– Adjusting: Chain tension should be checked every 1000 km and slack in the longest part should be between 2 and 3 centimeters.
– Lubricating: For added safety, always consult the manual. They recommend the best spray or product that won’t damage the chain.
3. Coolant
Another basic operation in motorcycle maintenance is coolant replacement. It’s not an extremely difficult step, but it’s very important for proper engine operation.
Coolant is typically replaced every 2 years, but monthly inspection is recommended. It’s quite obvious when replacement is needed because the coolant changes color.
4. Tires
A basic check before any long trip. This step in motorcycle maintenance is particularly crucial for motorcycles, as any wear or imperfection directly impacts balance. Consider three aspects:
– Pressure: Tire pressure depends on the tire and should always be checked when cold for accurate readings.
– Tread depth: According to the law, tread depth should not be less than 1.6 mm.
– Tire condition: If the tire has lost elasticity and shows cracks, it’s time to visit the nearest workshop for replacement.
